Car rental scams in Morocco: how to avoid them

The vast majority of Moroccan rental companies are reliable, but a few dubious practices spoil holidays every summer. Here is how to spot and avoid them, before, during and after your rental.

In short : the most common problems are fake rental companies asking for an advance payment, invented damage on return and deposits released late. To avoid them: rent from an identifiable company (address, trade register, reviews), insist on written confirmation, carry out a photographed inspection at pick-up and return, and get the deposit amount and refund time in writing.

1The most common scams

1. The fake rental company on social media

A very attractive ad, a WhatsApp number, a request for an advance by bank or money transfer… then silence. Be wary of any “rental company” with no physical address or identifiable business.

2. Invented damage on return

A scratch “discovered” on return and charged at a high price, when it was already there. The answer: a photographed inspection, signed by both sides.

3. The deposit that does not come back

A deposit held or charged and returned weeks later with no explanation. Get the amount and timeframe in writing.

4. The price that changes at the counter

“Mandatory” insurance added, a higher category imposed, unannounced fees. Keep your written confirmation with the total price.

5. Fuel charged at a premium

A car handed over nearly empty and a “full tank” charged very expensively on return. Check and photograph the fuel gauge at pick-up.

210 habits for renting safely

  1. Rent from an identifiable company: address, trade register, website, Google listing with reviews.
  2. Never pay an advance by money transfer to an individual.
  3. Insist on a written confirmation with a reference number and the total price.
  4. Ask for the deposit and excess amounts before booking.
  5. Read the general terms (fuel, late return, cancellation).
  6. Do the inspection with photos and video, including wheels, windscreen and interior.
  7. Photograph the fuel gauge and mileage at pick-up and return.
  8. Keep all written exchanges (email, WhatsApp).
  9. Return the car in the presence of an agent, never by just leaving the keys.
  10. Ask for a closing document on return.
Tip from our agency

A 60-second video walking round the car at pick-up, with the agent, protects you better than any contract. It is what we recommend to all our customers too.
