Fuel in Morocco: prices, stations and money-saving tips

How much does a full tank cost in Morocco? When do prices change? How much should you budget for a road trip? Here are the October 2026 figures and our tips to cut the bill.

Fuel is often the second-biggest expense of a road trip, right after the rental itself. Planning for it helps avoid surprises, especially since the price rises of autumn 2026.

1Fuel prices in October 2026

On 1 October 2026, prices rose by about 0.85 MAD/litre for diesel and 0.44 MAD/litre for petrol (source: Hespress). The next day, Le360 recorded these prices in central Casablanca:

Station (central Casablanca)DieselPetrol
Afriquia16,10 MAD/L15,59 MAD/L
Winxo16,15 MAD/L15,62 MAD/L
Shell / Petromin16,18 MAD/L15,63 MAD/L

Prices recorded on 2 October 2026. Prices vary slightly between cities and stations and are revised regularly: check the price displayed at the pump.

2How are prices set in Morocco?

Since liberalisation at the end of 2015, pump prices are no longer set by the State. Each distributor adjusts them according to international prices, usually around the 1st and 16th of each month. Differences between brands remain small, a few centimes.

3How much does a car journey cost?

Estimates with petrol at 15.60 MAD/L and average consumption of 6 L/100 km:

JourneyDistance ≈Fuel ≈
Casablanca → Marrakech240 km≈ 225 MAD
Casablanca → Rabat90 km≈ 85 MAD
Casablanca → Fez300 km≈ 280 MAD
Marrakech → Agadir250 km≈ 235 MAD
Tangier → Chefchaouen115 km≈ 110 MAD

Add motorway tolls on the main routes. A hybrid car noticeably reduces the bill in town: see why choose a hybrid.

4Fuel stations in Morocco

The main brands are Afriquia, Shell, TotalEnergies, Winxo, Petromin and Ziz. The network is dense in cities and on motorways, where service areas are open 24/7. In the south and in the mountains, stations are further apart: fill up as soon as the gauge drops below half. Card payment is accepted at most large stations, but carry cash on secondary roads.

57 tips to save fuel

  1. Choose a suitable vehicle: a city car in town, a hybrid for long distances.
  2. Drive at a steady speed: 110 km/h on the motorway instead of 120 clearly reduces consumption.
  3. Anticipate braking and avoid sudden acceleration.
  4. Switch off the air conditioning when it isn't needed, open the windows in town.
  5. Don't overload the boot.
  6. Check the fuel policy in the contract (return the vehicle with the same level).
  7. Fill up in town before returning the car: it is often cheaper than right next to the airports.
