Every year, hundreds of thousands of visitors and Moroccans living abroad rent a car in Morocco with a licence issued in another country. The good news: in the vast majority of cases, your national licence is enough. Here are the details to avoid any unpleasant surprises at the counter or during a roadside check.
1Is a foreign licence valid in Morocco?
Yes. Morocco's highway code (Law 52-05) allows holders of a valid foreign licence to drive in Morocco during a temporary stay, for up to one year. Beyond that, anyone settling in Morocco must exchange their licence for a Moroccan one, or retake the test if their country has no exchange agreement.
For a tourist stay or a family visit of a few weeks, your valid licence is therefore enough.
2Do you need an international licence?
An international licence is not compulsory if your licence is written in Latin or Arabic script (France, Belgium, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Canada, etc.). It is, however, strongly recommended if your licence uses another alphabet (Cyrillic, Chinese…), as it makes it easier for the agency and the police to read.
3Documents required to rent a car
- Original driving licence, valid.
- ID document: passport for foreigners, national ID card or passport for Moroccans living abroad.
- Means of payment in the main driver's name, for payment and the deposit.
- Address during your stay and a phone number where you can be reached (preferably WhatsApp).
If a second driver takes the wheel, they must present the same documents and be named on the contract.
4Minimum age and years of driving
In Morocco, most rental companies require a minimum age of about 20 years and a licence held for at least 2 years. These conditions may vary by vehicle category: a premium sedan such as the BMW 5 Series may require more experience. Always check the conditions when booking.
5Deposit and payment
Almost all agencies ask for a deposit. Its amount depends on the vehicle and the insurance plan chosen. It is returned when the vehicle is brought back if there is no damage and no extra charges. Always ask for the exact amount before you arrive: at MobilityLine, our team confirms it on WhatsApp before booking.
6Driving rules to know
| Rule | In Morocco |
|---|---|
| Speed in built-up areas | 60 km/h (often 40 km/h in signposted zones) |
| Speed on roads | 100 km/h |
| Speed on motorways | 120 km/h |
| Seat belt | Compulsory in front and rear |
| Phone while driving | Prohibited without a hands-free kit |

Speed cameras are frequent, especially at the entrance to towns. Motorways have tolls: keep a few dirhams or a bank card handy.
